Social Responsibility

Morningside is highly committed to its social responsibility. The Morningside Foundation both funds and is actively involved in shaping the outcome of its philanthropic endeavors. Enabling access to educational opportunities and supporting scientific research are the two major focuses.


Morningside Summer Schools in the Life Sceinces

In order to encourage university students to continue on to PhD studies in the life sciences, Morningside sponsors two summer schools each year in China. The summer school at the Chinese Academy of Science Kunming Institute of Zoology takes in 45-50 undergraduate students between their third and fourth year. The summer school at NIBS in BJ takes 60 undergraduate and high school sctudents. The objective of these courses is to train the students to read scientific papers critically and to give them an opportunity to do experiments in research laboratories.


The Chinese Academy of Science Morningside Center of Mathematics

In 1996, Morningside and the Chinese Academy of Science established the Chinese Academy of Science - Morningside Center for Mathematics. Prof. Shing-tung Yau, winner of a Fields Medal and a professor at Harvard University, has been the chairman of the Center’s academic committee since its inception. The Center seeks to develop young Chinese mathematicians by giving them exposure to world-class mathematicians who stay at the Center and providing guidance for their research.


International Conference for Chinese Mathematicians and the Morningside Medal of Mathematics Awards

Since 1998, Morningside has sponsored the International Conference for Chinese Mathematicians which is held once every three years. The Conference draws over a thousand participants from all over the world.
At each conference, the Morningside Medals of Mathematics are awarded to young Chinese mathematicians selected by an international panel of judges.


Morningside Scholarships

Since 1996, Morningside has provided five hundred scholarships each year for indigent students at five universities in China. These universities are:

  • Peking University
  • Shanghai Jiatong University
  • Tongji University
  • Tsinghua University

Morningside College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

In 2006, the Morningside Foundation endowed the Morningside College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Modeled after the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge, the Morningside College is intended to develop the students’ intellect and to prepare them to face an ever more complex and diverse world. James Mirrlees, winner of a Nobel Prize in Economics, was appointed the founding master of the College. 


Morningside Music Bridge

Since 1996, the Morningside Music Bridge program has selected talented young classical musicians from China and Canada each year to receive master’s classes at the Mount Royal College Conservatory of Music during the summer. Graduates of the Morningside Music Bridge program have won many prestigious international competitions such as the Paganini Award....


China Heritage Fund

Morningside participated in the founding of the China Heritage Fund in 1997 which was set up to protect and to restore historic buildings in China. Its first project, done in conjunction with the Palace Museum of Beijing, was to restore the Jian Fu Palace Garden located within the Forbidden City. This palace was built in 1740 by the Qianlong Emperor and was burnt down in 1923. The rebuilding, done with the same craftsmanship as was employed in the original palace, took five years and was completed in 2006.
